Screenplay Writing Basics

If you don’t know a slug line from a line of action description, this screenplay format program is for you! Beginning screenwriters will learn how to write a screenplay from the ground up, starting with the fundamentals of formatting a script page in Final Draft – the industry standard software. We are happy to be able to offer our students Final Draft at a 50% discount due to our enduring partnership with the company.

All of the essential elements of screenwriting are covered in this course, including how to introduce characters, format dialogue, use sluglines, use parentheticals, introduce sound effects, and efficiently move a scene between multiple locations. You’ll learn how to write actively and visually for the camera and how to keep your scenes engaging and tense with in-scene edits.

Finally you’ll apply what you learn by writing a two person dialogue scene and one multi location scene under the guidance of your instructor. At the end of the course if you want to proceed to our ‘idea to first draft ‘ program, we’ll analyze your emergent ideas and help you select the script or pilot you would like to write.
